Moss Stitch in a Square Free Tutorial

Last Updated on September 5, 2023

I really like the Moss stitch, it’s my go-to stitch when I’m stuck, or just want to make something without thinking too much.
There are 3 different ways to work that stitch, you can crochet the Moss stitch the regular way or crochet the Moss stitch in C2C method. But my favorite way is working the Moss stitch in a square!
When you crochet the moss stitch in the round to form a square, you get a beautiful textured fabric, which is kind of a modern granny square.
For this tutorial, we will make a dishcloth, scroll down for the detailed photo tutorial!

How to Crochet the Moss Stitch in a Square?

Working the Moss stitch in a square is a bit similar to crocheting a granny square, I did mention that it’s a sort of modern granny square version, right?
Starting with a magic ring and using only single crochet and chains, you work the moss stitch in the round, creating corners with 2 chains spaces.
After you get the hang of it (don’t worry you will get it so quickly!), you just continue and get into the rhythm.
Now, don’t worry if your square center is turning a little, it can be easily fixed with blocking.

Moss Stitch in a Square Blanket

Making a blanket using the Moss stitch in a square is very easy.
You just start working your square and make it as big as you’d like. I used this method in my Samma’s Baby Blanket pattern.
Another fun option is making a modern granny square blanket, using smaller squares of moss stitch in the round joined together. This option will create a unique looking blanket, like the gorgeous blanket made by Pamela Izquierdo!
