Sieve Stitch Crochet Using Extended Single Crochet

Last Updated on October 22, 2026

The Extended Sieve Stitch crochet pattern is the sixth section of the Renewed Rhythms Blanket Crochet Along! This stitch creates a simple, textured pattern.

It’s easy to work, using only 3 types of stitches, and creates a slightly different look than the “classic” crochet Sieve Stitch

How to change the width of this pattern – this extended crochet Sieve stitch pattern can be easily adjusted to any width you want to make a bigger blanket (or anything you’d like).

Just follow this stitch multiple: chain a multiple of 2, then add 1 more chain, and another 1 chain for the turning chain. For example, 14=12+1+1.

Extended Single Crochet and the Sieve Stitch Crochet Pattern

The extended single crochet (esc) is a variation of the regular single crochet that creates a slightly taller stitch. To make it, we yarn insert the hook into the indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop. Then, instead of working a regular single crochet, yarn over and pull through one loop, this step gives us a taller stitch. Then we yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops to complete the single crochet stitch.

In this section, I use the extended single crochet in the sieve stitch crochet pattern instead of the regular single crochet. This little change creates slightly taller “blocks” than in the regular Sieve stitch.

The Renewed Rhythms crochet blanket is a co-design blanket by Shannon from The Loophole Fox and Agat from Made by Gootie, that can be made either as a baby blanket, lapghan, or a throw.

This is a free crochet along blanket that will be hosted from October 5th-29th, 2026. The pattern will be free to view on the designers’ blogs. The 1st section – Berry Meadow and 3rd section – Bean Duo have been published and are available on the blog.
