Mosaic Crochet Placemat Pattern – Free Crochet Along

Last Updated on July 15, 2024

** The CAL is over! The free pattern is available below! **

I am so excited to share with you my very first crochet along! While I was designing the Bohemian Mosaic Crochet Placemat pattern, I knew it would be perfect for a crochet-along event.

ย If you are new to this concept, crochet along is an event where a pattern is being released in parts over a few weeks and is worked together along with other crocheters.

For this CAL event, we will be making this modern crochet placemat pattern, using the overlay mosaic technique.

How Will The Bohemian Mosaic Placemat Crochet Along Work?

The Bohemian Mosaic Placemat Crochet Along will be held for 2 weeks, starting on July 21st.

This free crochet rectangle placemat pattern is made using the overlay mosaic crochet method and is an intermediate skill level.
If you haven’t tried mosaic crochet before, don’t worry, there will be a video tutorial for the first part.
I invite you to join this event and learn a new technique!ย

The mosaic crochet placemat pattern will be released in 3 parts:
Part1: will be released on 07/21/2022
Part 2: will be released on 07/24/2022
Part 3: will be released on 07/28/2022
The written instructions will be FREE right here in this post, which will be updated with every part release.

If you prefer a PDF pattern with a chart, you can get the premium version.

What Yarn is Best For This Crochet Placemat?

For home decor items that get a lot of use, I like to use 100% cotton yarn. The cotton has a beautiful stitch definition and is very durable. It can be washed easily in the washing machine.

For my placemat, I used a local Israeli brand of 100% mercerized cotton called Heela.
But if you don’t have suitable yarn in your stash, here are some great options for yarn for this project:
Knit Picks – Shine Sport
Lion Brand – Cotton Bamboo Linen
Schachenmayr Catania

If you are looking for color combination inspiration, here are the beautiful placemats made by my wonderful testers!

How to Change The Placemat Size?

The placemat size is approx. 15.3×12.2” (39×31 cm).
The pattern has a repetition section of the main element.

You can change the placemat width by repeating this section as much as you would like, to create a mosaic crochet table runner, for example. Just keep in mind you will need more yarn than is listed here.

ย

I’m looking forward to the event to start and seeing all your beautiful placemats!

Notes

  • This pattern uses the overlay mosaic technique.
  • The chart for the pattern is included.
  • Every row is worked in a different color.
  • At the end of each row fasten off and cut the yarn, work over the tails of the yarn to save time weaving in at the end.
  • Pattern is worked from right to left on Right Side only.
  • Every row begins with a sc through both loops as a โ€œborderโ€ stitch.
  • Every row ends with a sc through both loops as a โ€œborderโ€ stitch.
  • Single Crochets are worked through back loop only of previous row, unless otherwise noted.
  • Double Crochets are worked through front loop only of stitch 2 rows below, skipping the stitch behind, unless otherwise noted.
  • Pattern begins with 1 border stitch, has 5 repeats of 16 stitches, and 1 stitch to even out the pattern, and 1 border stitch at the end.
  • How to change the width of the placemat: keep a multiple of 16 stitches, plus 3 stitches.
  • You can start the pattern by making a foundation chain like the pattern advised, or make a foundation single crochet (FSC) of 83 sc.

ย

Save time and work over your yarn tails!

Instead of weaving in all the yarn tails in the end, work over the previous rows’ tails at the beginning and end of each row.
When working a single crochet, keep the yarn tail between your working yarn and hook, then pull the yarn through to finish the stitch.

When working a double crochet, start the stitch normally and when about to pull the yarn to finish the stitch, move the yarn tail between your working yarn and hook, then pull the yarn through to finish the stitch.

At the end of the row, work over the yarn tail before reaching the end of the row.

How to Crochet the dc Cluster Stitch (dc-cl)

Yo, insert hook into indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull yarn through 2 loops.
Yo, insert hook into same st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull yarn through 2 loops. Yo and pull yarn through all 3 loops.

How to Join with a Single Crochet

Make a slip knot, insert hook into both loop of 1st st, yo and pull up a loop,yo and pull through both 2 loops.

  2. Can this be adapted for use with a super bulky (CYC #6) yarn?

    1. Hi Melissa,
I’m not sure what’s the answer to your question, since I haven’t tried crocheting mosaic crochet with #6 yarn.
But I think that there’s a chance it will work, I would try making a small swatch of one pattern repeat for a few rows and see how you like the result.

I’m guessing you want to make a rug instead, and I think it would be super pretty!

      1. Actually, I want to make a placemat, but I think there would be fewer repeats of the pattern. Thanks!
