This crochet hanging basket pattern is a beginner friendly pattern, it is also a great crochet project if you want to learn how to crochet the Suzette stitch and end up with a super practical item.
The Suzette Basket is a perfect addition to your home, it has so many uses (especially if you are disorganized like me)!
This crochet basket can be used at the entrance of your home to keep your keys and mail, in your craft room as a project or yarn holder, or as a crochet plant hanger.

How to Crochet a Hanging Basket?
Well, there are a few different ways to crochet a hanging basket, and it really depends on the final look you want to achieve.
If you want a more slouchy look, the Teardrop types are the best fit. and if you want a more ‘stable’ basket, you can go with an easy technique of making a regular crochet basket, and attach (or crochet) a strap. Both types usually start with a magic loop and are crocheted in the round.
Another option of a more ‘flat’ basket is constructed from a square or a triangle where all corners except one (the top of the basket) are being sewn together to form a ‘pocket’.

About the Hanging Basket Design and Construction
The basket is made out of a square where 3 of its corners are folded towards the middle and then sewn along the sides.
The loop is crocheted after the square is done and is attached to the corner where we made the last stitch, which will be the top of the basket.
The square is made using the Suzette Stitch to obtain a nice textured fabric. The Suzette crochet stitch is repetition of [1sc, 1dc] worked back and forth, while only crocheting into the single crochet and skipping the double crochet.

How to Crochet the Suzette Hanging Basket
Materials
– 6.0 / J mm Crochet hook (I love the Etimo and Clover hooks).
– For this pattern I used Knit Picks – Comfy Worsted yarn by WeCrochet – Worsted (#4) weight yarn.
* can be substituted with 1 strand of Chunky weight yarn.

– Total amount of yarn needed: 170gr / 340m / 370ysd

– Tapestry needle
Skill level – easy
Gauge (in Suzette stitch) – 12 sts and 10 rows = 4 in/10 cm with 6.0mm / J hook.

Notes
- ch1 does not count as a stitch at the beginning of the row.

- After row 2, make sure your piece is 12in (30.5cm) wide. We’ll be working the piece to create a 12’’ square.

Suzette Hanging Basket Crochet Pattern Instructions
With 2 strands held together – Ch 37
Row 1: 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each ch to the end of the row, turn (36 sc).
Row 2: ch1, [1sc, 1dc] in 1st sc, skip next sc.
* [1sc, 1dc] in next sc, skip next sc; Repeat from * to last sc, 1sc in last sc, turn. (19 sc, 18 dc)
Row 3: ch1, [1sc, 1dc] in 1st sc, skip next dc.
* [1sc, 1dc] in next sc, skip next dc; Repeat from * to last sc, 1sc in last sc, turn. (19 sc, 18 dc)
Continue working row 3 until the side of your piece measures 12in (30.5cm).

Making the loop
ch8, ss into the base of the same sc stitch, turn.
ch1, work 16sc around the ch-8 loop, ss to the top of sc from the last row 3.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Sewing the basket
With the loop at the top, fold the 3 corners of the square towards the middle as shown in the photo.
Using a tapestry needle, whip stitch as directed in the photo to sew up the front of the basket.
What Yarn Should You Use for a Crochet Hanging Basket Pattern?
This pattern is crocheted with 2 worsted weight yarn strands held together.
The best yarn for this kind of project would be cotton. It is a strong fiber and will keep the shape of the basket.
You can also use one strand of Chunky yarn instead of 2 Worsted strands held together
For this basket, I used Knit Picks – Comfy Worsted yarn by WeCrochet. This is a Worsted (#4) weight yarn, it is 75% Pima Cotton, 25% Acrylic, it’s strong enough for home decor projects, yet still nice and soft.

oh my gosh, this brings back memories! years ago as a young mother I made a diaper Stacker that was kind of sort of like this. as I remember it it had a rectangle bottom but I can’t for the life of me remember how I work the sides Etc! I also don’t remember if it was a pattern that I came up with all my own or if I followed someone else’s design . what fun memories!
I love this pattern! a n8ce repeat that is fun to work up…and works up and looks great, too!!
Working on three of these now as Christmas stocking alternatives. I’m using three colors: 6 rows of 2 strands red, 6 rows of 1 red and 1 green, 6 rows of 2 strands green, 6 rows of 1 green and 1 white sparkle, 6 rows of 2 strands white sparkle, and 6 rows of 1 white sparkle and 1 red. They are coming out super adorable and I can’t wait to see them on the mantle!
Adding… I’m also closing up the opening a bit more to make it more of a pouch shape.
Adding again… I’m using Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton yarn in Red, Bright Green, and White Sparkle.
