How to Crochet a Washcloth

Crocheting a washcloth is very easy and it’s a great project for beginners, you just need to choose a soft textured crochet stitch and make it into a square.

You can work a square crochet washcloth from the middle out, as I did in my Moss Stitch in a Square, or work it back and forth as I did in this washcloth that we’ll be making in this post.

What Type of Yarn Should Be Used For a Crochet Washcloth?

The answer to this question is simple, always use 100% cotton yarn, or at least 70% cotton blend yarn.

For this washcloth, I used Knit Picks – Dishie yarn. The Dishie is one of my favorite cotton yarns to use, it’s soft but sturdy, feels nice on my skin and comes in so many beautiful colors!

Cotton yarn is absorbent and nice on your skin, and very durable, so you can easily toss your crochet washcloth into the washing machine, and reuse it.

How Big Should a Crochet Washcloth Be?

The average size of a washcloth is usually 8×8″ (20.5×20.5cm). This size is comfortable and big enough to hold in your hand and has enough surface to clean well and absorb the water.

Although you can make it bigger or smaller, whatever is comfortable for you, it’s easy to change size, just check the gauge and change the number of starting chains.

What Crochet Stitches Are Best For a Washcloth?

Basic stitches are preferable when making a crochet washcloth pattern since they create a soft and flat surface.

Keep in mind that you can use almost any stitch combination that you find nice on your skin for a crochet washcloth. For this pattern, we will use the Spider Stitch.

My favorite stitches to use for washcloths are:

Spider Stitch Crochet Washcloth

For this crochet washcloth pattern, we are using the lovely textured Spider stitch.ย

The Spider stitch is an easy stitch, it’s a combination of only single crochet and chain. This stitch is so beautiful, I also used it in the Lobelia Nesting Basket and Lobelia Plant Pot Holder.

The stitch is worked by crocheting 1 single crochet, 1ch, and 1 single crochet into the same chain, and then working back and forth, while crocheting the [1sc, ch1, 1sc] all together into the ch-1 space from the previous row.

Notes

  • The washcloth is worked over an even number of chains, then you skip the first chain and work over an odd number of stitches.
  • You donโ€™t chain at the beginning of the row, thereโ€™s no turning chain.
  • The work curls at the first 1-2 rows, and then straighten up as you keep crocheting.
  • The crochet washcloth is worked with the Spider Stitch, you can find a full photo and video tutorials for the Spider Stitch in this post.
