The Sashay Asymmetrical crochet shawl pattern is a triangle-shaped shawl.
The asymmetrical triangle construction is similar to the Flowers for Simone Shawl and creates a narrow and long triangle shape, which makes it almost into an asymmetrical crochet scarf.
This fun pattern is full of texture, with the addition of colorwork to add more interest to the shawl.

How to Crochet an Asymmetrical Shawl?
When crocheting an asymmetrical triangle shawl, your pattern will usually work sideways rather than from the top down.
To create the asymmetrical crochet shawl shape when starting from the tip of the triangle you then have two options.
The first one is increasing one side of the square every few rows, the other option which will be used in the Sashay Shawl is increasing every few rows and decreasing in bigger intervals which creates “steps” at the edge of the shawl.

The Sashay Triangle Crochet Shawl Design and Construction
The Sashay crochet shawl is made using the half double crochet V stitch for a beautiful texture, with V-puff stitches ‘columns’ along the shawl crocheted with different colors creating diagonal lines.
The asymmetrical construction is made by increasing every 3 rows, and decreasing every 20 rows.
I know it sounds complicated, but it’s easier than it looks and once you get the hang of it, you’ll get into the rhythm!

What Type of Yarn Should You For Your Crochet Shawl?
My favorite type of yarn to use for shawls and scarves is cotton, or natural fiber mix yarn because it has a great stitch definition, but any wool or acrylic kind of yarn will be great for this pattern.
For this crochet shawl, I used Knit Picks – CotLin yarn. This is a DK (#3) weight yarn, it is 70% Tangius Cotton & 30% Linen, the fiber is easy to work with and really nice and soft, with a great stitch definition.

โ 4.0 / G mm crochet hook (I love the Etimo and Clover hooks).
โ DK (#3) weight yarn. For this pattern I used Knit Picks – CotLin yarn.
– Total amount of yarn needed:
Color A (Sagebrush) – 300gr/738yds/672m
Color B (Linen) – 50gr/123yds/112m
Color C (Flamingo) – 50gr/74yds/67m

Gauge (in half double crochet) – 16 sts and 12 rows = 4 in/10 cm with 4.0mm / G hook.

ch – chain
st – stitch
hdc – half double crochet
V-hdc – [1hdc, ch1, 1hdc] in same space / stitch
Puff – (yo, insert hook into next st, yo and pull up a loop) x 3 times working into same st, yo and pull through all 7 loops on hook
V-puff – [1puff, ch1, 1puff]
Finished size – 63x20in (160x50cm)
Notes
- The shawl starts at one end and is worked from side to side. After the setup section, the shawl is increasing every 3 rows on one side and decreases every 20 rows on the other side creating โstepsโ.
- A new V-puff โcolumnโ is added after every 4 V-hdc โcolumnsโ.
- ch2 at the beginning of the row counts as 1hdc.
- ch3 at the beginning of the row counts as 1hdc+ch1.
- Changing colors is optional, you can crochet the shawl with only one color and ignore the changing colors instructions.
- When indicated [X], then you change to the indicated color (A / B / C).
- When changing colors: at the last stitch before changing the color- work the stitch with the same color, then at the last yarn over pick up the new color and finish the stitch with the new color, ending with the new color on your hook.
- When changing colors, make sure to keep your yarn on the same side of the work.
- When changing color in the middle of the row, work over the main color (color A), so it wonโt be seen.

That’s an interesting question, the shawl is made using the V-hdc stitch.
When this V stitch is worked flat, it is worked over an even number of chains.
