The Crab Stitch is also known as a Reverse Single Crochet stitch. It’s a beautiful crochet edge stitch that will add a unique finish to your project.
You can use it for many projects, such as hats, scarves, washcloths, or hot pads. I think it will make beautiful crochet edging for a granny square blanket.
In this post, you will find both written instructions and a photo tutorial, including a tutorial on how to join the stitch at the end of the round.

The Reversed Single Crochet stitch (AKA Crab Stitch), is not as complicated as it looks (I used it in my Cornerstone Washcloth). The stitch is made while working a single crochet in the “wrong direction”.
That means that if you usually work a crochet row from right to left, when working the Crab stitch, you will work from left to right, crocheting into both loops of the stitch to the right of your crochet hook, which makes it a single crochet reverse stitch.

– Crochet hook 4.0 mm / G (I love the Tulip Etimo crochet hooks).
– DK (#3) weight yarn – I used Fibra Natura Cottonwood.

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
Reverse Single Crochet Stitch Photo Tutorial
Ch 1, work a single crochet into the stitch to the right of your hook – working from the left to the right.
With the Right Side facing you: Insert your hook into the stitch to the right side of your hook (pic 2), and pull up a loop (pics 3&4), yo over and pull the yarn through all 2 loops on your hook (pic 5).
Continue working into the stitches to the right (pics 6-8).
How to Join the Reversed Single Crochet Stitch
Now that you have reached the end of the round, and want to join seamlessly, without the join being visible, follow these steps:
Since we can’t see the top of the stitch, we are joining on the side of the stitch.
- Turn your work to the wrong side, and remove the hook from the loop.
- Insert the hook from left to right into the 2 “legs” of the first stitch of the round. These are the first 2 “legs” of the beginning of the round.
- Pull the loop of the last stitch you made through the 2 legs, and fasten off.
