Braided Beans – Rectangle Crochet Bag Pattern
Last Updated on February 16, 2026
The Braided Beans bag is a beautifully textured, rectangle crochet bag pattern. It’s actually a C2C crochet bag since we crochet a C2C rectangle and fold it into a bag!
The Braided Beans pattern is repetitive and relaxing, making this crochet bag the perfect mindless crochet pattern.

You know how much I love sparing the long beginning chains in my patterns and working from corner to corner whenever possible. For the Braided Beans rectangle crochet bag, I used my C2C Braided Beans pattern.
The corner to corner Braided Beans pattern is made using the C2C Wattle stitch combined with the Bean stitch to create the braided effect. To make the “braids” pop, I added an extra loop to the Bean stitch, to make it bigger.
I also used this pattern to make a table runner, it turned out so pretty!

The Braided Beans Rectangle Bag Construction
The unique and fun construction of this bag is surprisingly easy! We are making one crochet rectangle, then the rectangle is folded and seamed on two sides of the bag. The rectangle needs to be in a 1:3 ratio, so for our bag we will make a 10×30 in rectangle.
To make your bag bigger or smaller, just make a rectangle in a 1:3 ratio and follow the assembly instructions.

How to Crochet the Mini Bean Stitch (mb):
Insert hook into indicated st, yo and pull up a loop. Yo and insert hook into same st, yo and pull up a loop. yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

Notes
- To make it easier to find the ch3 / ch2 spaces at the end of the row, place a stitch marker when you ch3/ch2 at the beginning of each row.
- The Wattle stitches are worked into the ch-1 sp.
- The [1 sc, ch 1, 1 LB] are worked into the top of the LB/mb stitches (except of in row 2).
- Ch-1 sp counts as a stitch, when instructed to skip sts.
- The bag is crocheted from corner to corner to create a 10×30” rectangle that is being folded and seamed.
- To change the size of the bag – you can make the rectangle bigger or smaller, just make sure to keep a ratio of 1:3.

Fasten off, don’t cut the yarn, you will use it to seam the bag.
Continue to assemble the bag.
Assembly
Folding
Lay the rectangle flat with the wrong side upwards, fold the bottom right corner up and top left corner down, then fold the bottom part up in 45 degrees toward the right, as shown in the diagram.
With the loop at the top, fold the 3 corners of the square towards the middle as shown in the photo.
Using a tapestry needle and one strand of your yarn, whip stitch as directed in the photo to sew up the front of the basket.
Seaming
Before seaming, try to align the bag, so the cables will be aligned.
To seam the bag, with a tapestry needle work a Whip stitch (or your preferred seaming method) on both sides of the bag, then fasten off and weave in the ends.

Making the strap
Leave a long enough tail to weave in the end, make a slip knot and join the yarn with a slip stitch to one of the top points of the bag.
Chain 60 (or as long as you want the strap to be), make sure your chains are not twisted and slip stitch to the second top point (pic 1), turn.
Work sc into the middle loop of each of the chains across (pics 2&3), slip stitch to the top point of the bag, turn (make sure to turn in the same direction you turned last time).
Work sc in each of the sc across, slip stitch to the top point of the bag. Fasten off and weave in the end
