FAQs About Crochet Potholders
Can You Use Mercerized Cotton For Potholders?
Yes! 100% cotton yarn is the best yarn to use for a crochet potholder. You can use either soft cotton yarn, or mercerized cotton, both are resistant to high temperatures and you can easily toss them into the washing machine.
I do like the look of the mercerized cotton yarn better, it is a bit more sturdy than regular cotton and has this nice shine to it.
Can Acrylic Yarn Be Used for Potholders?
Using acrylic yarn for crochet potholders and trivets, and in general, any item that being used with high temperature is not advisable.
The acrylic and synthetic yarns are not resistant to high temperatures and can melt when being exposed to high temperatures for too long.
Best Stitches for Crochet Potholders
The best stitch for a potholder, in my opinion, would be the Thermal stitch, because it creates a very thick and dense fabric.
But if you prefer more basic stitches, single crochet is also a great stitch for pot holders, when using a thick yarn. You can use any dense (not lacy) stitch you prefer, and it’s also better to create two layers and stitch them together, so your potholder will be thick enough.
