How Do You Crochet a Simple Coaster?

You can crochet a coaster with almost any stitch you like. But the easiest way to crochet a nice simple coaster is to create a crochet circle.

I like to crochet a perfect circle in a single crochet stitch, I love the texture and density of the stitch, it creates a solid circle, perfect as a coaster.

Using the tutorial linked above, just work according to the pattern and make the circle as big as you’d like.

How Do You Crochet a Square Coaster?

Making a square coaster is super easy!

First, choose the crochet stitch you want to use, you can either make a chain in the desired width and work it back or forth, or crochet your coaster from the middle out, and make it as big as you’d like.

For working back and forth, I like using the Alternating Spike Stitch and Spider Stitch. When I’m making square coasters from the middle out, my favorite stitches to use are the Moss Stitch and Iris Stitch in a square.

And if you want to skip the long chain and work from one corner to the other without decreasing, use the Mitered Square stitch!

How Big Should Crochet Coasters Be?

The finished size of your crochet coaster is a personal preference (and depends on how big your mugs are!).

But as a rule of thumb, your coaster width or diameter should be between 3-5” (7.6-12.7 cm).

What Is the Best Yarn To Use for Crochet Coasters?

You can basically use any yarn you want, because the cup is not hot enough to melt your acrylic yarn.

But my personal preference for yarn when I’m making crochet coasters is always 100% cotton.

I like cotton yarn because it lays down beautifully after blocking, has a nice stitch definition and is very durable and can just be tossed into the washing machine if my drink is spilled on the coaster.
