The Crochet Thermal Stitch creates a thick double-layered fabric which is great for potholders, hot pads, and coasters, but you can use it for any other project, such as hats, bags, mittens, etc. The double layer is made by working both into the stitch from the previous row, and the stitch one row below.
I promise it is not as complicated as you’d think! I put together a super detailed photo tutorial to help you conquer the crochet Thermal stitch.

The Thermal crochet stitch is one of the thickest crochet stitches. If you need to create a thick crochet fabric for your project, this is a fabulous option.
I made a detailed photo tutorial for the Thermal stitch using the single stitch, but you can use both the half double crochet and double crochet stitches to make a crochet thermal stitch.
- SC Thermal Stitch (full instructions and photo tutorial below) – insert your hook through back loop of the next stitch and through the back loop of the parallel stitch 1 row below, yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops, then yarn over again and pull the yarn through the 2 loops to complete a sc stitch.
- Half Double Crochet Thermal Stitch – Yarn over, insert your hook through back loop of the next stitch and through the back loop of the parallel stitch 1 row below, yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops, then yarn over again and pull the yarn through the 3 loops to complete a hdc stitch.
- Double Crochet Thermal Stitch – Yarn over, insert your hook through back loop of the next stitch and through the back loop of the parallel stitch 1 row below, yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops, then yarn over again and pull the yarn through 2 loops, yarn over again and pull the yarn through the 2 loops to complete a dc stitch.

Materials I Used in This Tutorial
– Crochet hook 3.0 mm / G (I love the Tulip Etimo crochet hooks).
– Sport (#2) weight yarn – I used Knit Picks Shine Sport.
Abbreviations (US)
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
Notes
- The thermal stitch is worked into both the back loop and the loop two roes below.
- It’s easier to work the stitch when the work is held at 90 degrees (as shown in the photos).
- The first 2 rows can be a bit tricky, but it gets much easier afterward.
- The pattern is reversible.
- This tutorial is made with sc stitches, you can replace them with hdc or dc and work them with the same method as shown below.
Crochet Thermal Stitch Photo Tutorial
Chain any number of chains.
Row 1: work a single crochet into the back loop of the second ch from the hook, and in each of the chains across, don’t turn. Rotate the work in 90 degrees, as shown below.
Row 2: Ch 1, insert your hook through back loop of the next stitch and through the back loop of the parallel stitch 1 row below, yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops, then yarn over again and pull the yarn through the 2 loops to complete a sc stitch.
Continue working across to the end of the row.
* When you finish this row, there’s no need to turn (the work will be rotated in 180 degrees while you work the stitch, there’s no need to flip it to the other side), just keep the work as it is and repeat working in each stitch in the next row.
** We don’t turn, we are working into the wrong side.
Continue working row 2, until you reach the desired length. Then continue to row 3 to finish the work.
Row 3 (last row): Ch 1, insert your hook through both loops of the next stitch and through the back loop of the parallel stitch 1 row below, yarn over and pull the yarn through 3 loops, then yarn over again and pull the yarn through the 2 loops to complete a sc stitch.
Continue working across to the end of the row.
Fasten off, soak and block if needed.
