I designed this rectangle basket crochet pattern because I wanted a small rectangle storage for all the clutter that we hold near the entrance door.
I wanted to start with a solid rectangle, like I did in my Boho Door Stopper and then worked up the sides to form a basket. But I wasn’t happy with the sturdiness of the basket, and that’s how I came up with the foldable double-layer basket sides.
If you want to change the size of the basket, just repeat round 3 as much as you’d like and continue working the pattern, ignoring the stitch count.

Materials
– Crochet hooks: 5.5 mm / I & 6 mm / J (I love the Tulip Etimo and Clover hooks).
– Worsted (#4) weight cotton yarn (I used Knit Picks – Comfy Worsted)
Total amount of yarn needed: 130gr/259m/283yds
** The pattern is worked with 2 strands held together
– 5 stitch markers (optional)
Finished Size – Base: 6×4.5 in (15.2×11.4 cm), Height: 3 in (7.6 cm) – can be made bigger
Gauge (in pattern): Working rounds 1-4 with a 6.0 / J hook will result in a 4.25×2.25 in (10.8×5.7 cm)
Abbreviations (US)
blo – work through back loop only
ch – chain
flo – work through front loop only
hdc – half double crochet
PM – place marker
sc – single crochet
st – stitch
Notes
- Ch 1 at the beginning of the round and everywhere else indicated counts as 1 sc.
- The basket base and outer side are worked with 6 mm / J hook, while the inner side is worked with 5.5 mm / I hook.
- We will be working the basket on it’s “wrong side” and then folding the top of the basket, so the “right side” is facing out.
- To avoid holes in the starting chains: start by working into the back middle loop of the chains, then when working on the other side of the chains, work into the front loop of the chains.
- We place stitch marker at each corner of the rectangle to make it easier to find them, this is optional.

Base – With a 6 mm / J hook – Ch 9 with 2 strands held together
** I like working into the back-middle loop of the chain to avoid holes in the middle of the fabric. Then, when working on the other side of the chains, work into the front loop of the chains.
Round 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook- PM (ch 1 counts as 1 sc here and throughout), 1 sc in next 6 ch, [1 sc-PM, 1 sc, 1 sc-PM] in last ch.
Now you will be working on the opposite side of the chains: 1 sc in next 6 ch, 1 sc-PM in last ch, ss into back loop of beginning ch-1. (18 sc)
- Tip: PM last st of the round (before connecting to 1st ch of previous round). This helps with correct counting and not adding unnecessary sts.

Round 2: Ss into next sc (remove marker), ch 1 (counts as 1 sc here and throughout),
[1 hdc-PM, 1 sc] in same sc, 1 sc in next 6 sc, [1 sc, 1 hdc-PM, 1 sc] in next sc (marker), 1 sc in next sc, [1 sc, 1 hdc-PM, 1 sc] in next sc (marker), 1 sc in next 6 sc, [1 sc, 1 hdc-PM, 1 sc] in next sc (marker), 1 sc in next sc, ss into back loop beginning ch-1. (22 sc, 4 hdc)
Round 3: Ss into next hdc (remove marker), ch 1, [1 hdc-PM, 1 sc] in same hdc.
* 1 sc in each sc until marker, [1 sc, 1 hdc-PM, 1 sc] in next hdc (marker); Repeat from * 2 more times, 1 sc in each sc to end of the round, ss into back loop of beginning ch-1.
(30 sc, 4 hdc)
Rounds 4-7: Repeat round 3. Finishing round 7 with (62 sc, 4 hdc).

Inner Side – With a 5.5 mm / I hook
Round 8: Ss into flo of next hdc (remove marker), ch 1, 1 sc in flo of each st around, ss into back loop of beginning ch-1. (66 sc flo)
Round 9: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc around, ss into back loop of beginning ch-1. (66 sc)
Rounds 10-15: Repeat round 9.

Outer side – With a 6 mm / J hook
Round 16: Ch 1, 1 sc in blo of each sc around, ss into back loop of beginning ch-1. (66 sc blo)
Round 17: Ch 1, 1 sc in blo of each sc blo around, ss into back loop of beginning ch-1.
(66 sc blo)
Rounds 18-20: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc around, ss into back loop of beginning ch-1. (66 sc)
With a 5.5 mm / I hook
Round 21: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc around, ss into back loop of beginning ch-1. (66 sc)
Fasten off and weave in the ends. Fold the top part over the outer side of the basket to form a double layered basket side.
