The Crochet Berry Stitch is an easy way to create a bobble stitch that looks like a little “berry”.
It makes a lovely alternative to the crochet puff stitch and a beautiful textured stitch. It’s a perfect stitch for crochet blankets and washcloths because of its nice texture.
In this post, you will find both written instructions and a step-by-step photo tutorial.

The Crochet Berry stitch is actually a modified puff stitch, after the first yarn over and the yarn pull from the indicated stitch, we yarn over again and then pull the yarn through only one loop. Then we continue to yarn over like a puff stitch.
This small change in the stitch creates a round bobble stitch that resembles a round berry shape. I also used the berry stitch to create an edging when I wanted to add tiny round bobbles as an edge to a project.

Skill level – Easy (requires some experience)
Materials I Used in This Tutorial
– Crochet hook 5.0 mm / H (I love the Tulip Etimo crochet hooks).
– Worsted (#4) weight yarn – I used Knit Picks – Mighty Stitch.
Abbreviations (US)
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
yo – yarn over
Notes
- The Berries are worked on the wrong side of the project so they will “pop” on the right side.
- If you want the berries to pop more, you can work a slip stitch instead of a single crochet after the Berry Stitch.
How to Crochet the Berry Stitch
Chain an even number of chains.
Row 1 (RS): Work 1 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across, turn.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, 1 sc in 1st sc.
Work a Berry Stitch: yo, insert hook in next st, yo and pull yarn through (3 loops on hook).
Yo and pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hook).
Yo, insert hook into same st, yo and pull through (5 loops on hook).
Yo and pull yarn through all 5 loops.
Continuing Row 2 (WS):
After you worked the Berry Stitch, work 1 sc in the next stitch.
Continue working: * 1 Berry stitch in next sc, 1 sc in next sc; Repeat from * until the end of the row, turn.
Row 3 (RS):
Ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch across, turn.
Row 4 (WS): Ch 1, work 1 sc in 1st sc.
* 1 Berry in next sc, 1 sc in next sc; Repeat from * until the end of the row, turn.
Repeat rows 3-4, make sure to finish with row 3.
