Free Summer Shawl Crochet Pattern – In Bloom Ruana CAL 2023

Last Updated on July 24, 2023

** The crochet-along is over! You can find the links to the free patterns of all the different parts below **

Happy Summer! I’m happy to finally have some warm weather, and put away the coats and sweaters.

To celebrate the end of the winter, my friend Shannon from The Loophole Fox and I have joined forces again and designed together a lacy floral-themed ruana-shawl, which is the perfect summer shawl crochet pattern for a cool summer night, the In Bloom Ruana.

The ruana is made out of 3 squares joined together, where each square is made using the Mitered Square method which is a method Shannon and I really love.

How Will The In Bloom Ruana Crochet Along Work?

A Collaborative Crochet Along (CAL) by The Loophole Fox & Made by Gootie

First things first, if you never heard of a crochet along (CAL) before, a CAL is an event where different crocheters around the world are working together on a pattern at the same time.

Each different part of the pattern will be released here in this post at a different time during the event. You will find the link for each part as it releases here below.
This free crochet ruana pattern is made using the Mitered Square method (which means it spares you the long starting chain!).

The Mitered Square method, which I also used in my Mitered Butterflies Blanket and Mitered Tulips Blanket, is worked by starting from one corner of the square. The square continues increasing with each row worked by working on 2 sides of the squares until reaching your desired size.

If you haven’t tried mitered method before, don’t worry, there will be a lot of photo tutorials to help you through the pattern!
We invite you to join this event and learn a new technique!

The In Bloom Ruana PDF Pattern

We know not everyone likes to jump from one website to the other or prefers to have their patterns without the ads, (or maybe just don’t want to wait!).

We have put together a premium PDF version for the In BLoom Ruana which has the full instructions, different squares instructions, and 2 seaming options, with a full photo tutorial for each section.
You will get both the full photo tutorials PDF version and a print-friendly PDF version without the photos.

The In Bloom Ruana Construction

The In Bloom Ruana is constructed from 3 squares seamed together, while each of the squares is made using the mitered square method described above.

The pattern offers 2 different squares designs: one is made with little flower buds and the second celebrates the blooming of the flowers.
Start by crocheting the Flower Buds Square, continue with crocheting the Blooming Square, and
finally, choose between the two, and crochet it for your third square.

In the photo above, you can see 2 options to create the ruana:
1) The lavender ruana made by Shannon with 2 squares of the Blooming Square in the front and 1 square at the back of the Flower Buds Square.
2) The pink ruana made by Agat with 2 squares of the Flower Buds Squares in the front.

Final Size of the In Bloom Ruana

The crochet ruana pattern is made out of 3 squares, each approximately is 19.5 x19.5 inch (49.5×49.5 cm).

We used a light DK yarn for our ruana, so it’s OK if your gauge is a bit bigger than stated in the instructions, it only means your ruana will turn out slightly bigger.

The final In Bloom Ruana Shawl Pattern is 28 inch (71.1 cm) – Length from center-back neckline
to the tip of the triangle, and 57 inch (144.8 cm) – Wingspan.

Blocking Your Ruana

Because of the nature of the mitered square (which can be in a diamond shape), itโ€™s important to block your finished item. You can either block each square, or the finished ruana.
For transparency: We elected to block each square separately and not
block the finished Ruana as it did not require additional blocking.

Materials You Will Need For this Ruana-Shawl CAL Pattern

For our ruana, we used Stylecraft Naturals Bambo & Cotton DK, which consists of 60% bamboo and 40% cotton which makes it so nice and soft, with a little shine. We do recommend using cotton, or cotton blend for best result and texture for your ruana.

Please note: because this is a cotton and bamboo blend, this DK yarn is on the thinner side and may have a significant gauge difference from an acrylic or wool DK. If you wish to use acrylic or wool yarn, you may want to look into a Sport (2) weight instead.

You can use any DK (#3) yarn you have on hand, good yarn substitutions would be:
Premier – Bamboo Fair
Bernat – Softee Cotton
Lion Brand – Comfy Cotton Blend
Knit Picks – CotLin

Materials needed for the In Bloom Ruana
โ€“ 3.5 mm / E crochet hook
โ€“ Stitch markers (if preferred)
โ€“ Scissors
โ€“ Tapestry needle

โ€“ DK (#3) weight yarn (we used Stylecraft Naturals Bambo & Cotton DK)

Yarn Requirements
DK (3) Weight cotton or cotton blend yarn of your choice. You will need
approximately:
Total Amount of Yarn Needed:
500 g / 1,250 m / 1,365 yards.
Per Square Made:
160 g / 400 m / 437 yards.

If you are looking for some inspiration when looking for yarn, here are the beautiful ruanas made by our wonderful testers!

I’m looking forward to the event starting and seeing all your beautiful ruana-shawls!

  1. Good morning ๐Ÿ˜ŠI would love to join your crochet along and hope to be able to find the specified yarn you list. So far most are out of stock, yikes. Iโ€™ll continue to search. Have a beautiful day. Sincerely, Lynne

  2. can I use a 5mm hook because using smaller hooks are hard for me to use

    1. If you still using DK yarn, I would suggest trying with a 4 mm or 4.5 mm hook first, and see how your gauge turns out.
I think using 5mm hook with a DK yarn will create a fabric which is too loose.
So another option is using Worsted yarn, just take into account that your gauge will be bigger and so is the finished size of your shawl ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Yarn just ordered! Looking forward to working two of these.
    Thank you
