Twisted Single Crochet (Alternative Crab Stitch)

Last Updated on July 30, 2024

The Twisted Single Crochet Stitch is an easy alternative to the crochet Crab Stitch (also known as the Reversed Single crochet stitch).

This stitch will make a perfect elegant crochet border. It’s minimal but still has a beautiful effect.

You can use it in any project you’d like, from blankets to hot pads, washcloths, bags, and even garments.

In this post, you will find both written instructions and a photo tutorial, including a tutorial on how to join the stitch at the end of the round.

Instead of working in reverse – from left to right (as you do in the Crab stitch), you will be working as usual (from right to left) but you will twist your hook just before finishing the single crochet stitch.

This twist creates a similar look to the Crab stitch, but the only difference is that the stitch is leaned the other way.

I found this stitch to be slower to make for me (probably because of the twisting), than when I worked the Crab stitch, but it will make a great alternative if you find the Crab stitch to be difficult.

How to Join the Twisted Single Crochet Stitch

Now that you have reached the end of the round, and want to join seamlessly, without the join being visible, follow these steps:

Since we can’t see the top of the stitch, we are joining on the side of the stitch.

  1. Turn your work to the wrong side, and remove the hook from the loop.
  2. Insert the hook from right to left into the 2 “legs” of the first stitch of the round. These are the first 2 “legs” of the beginning of the round.
  3. Pull the loop of the last stitch you made through the 2 legs, and fasten off.

  1. I love both these stitches. And I can’t wait to try the twisting single crochet. But how do I join each stitch seamlessly? I like using the invisible join for a single crochet round, but when I use the crab stitch it’s so obvious where the round ends. Thank you!

    1. Hi Cathy,
I just added instructions on how to join seamlessly at the end of the round.
