Waves of Grain – Square Crochet Baby Blanket Free Pattern
Last Updated on January 19, 2026
The Waves of Grain pattern is a beautifully textured square crochet baby blanket crocheted from the middle out.
This is a big version of my Waves of Grain Granny Square pattern that I turned into a baby blanket by crocheting a blanket in the round.
The pattern features a nice repeat section that can be easily repeated to create a blanket with a unique, wheat-like texture.

I made this blanket as a gift to my friend who had a new baby boy. I love the texture of my Waves of Grain (wheat stitch) and wanted to use it to make a blanket (I also used this stitch in the Tranquility Blanket and Rustling Leaves Blanket).
Since I prefer not to start my blankets with a long chain, I used my Waves of Grain Granny Square pattern to crochet a blanket from the middle. I just repeated the pattern to create a big enough square to be a baby blanket.
If you’re like me, and prefer to spare the long beginning chains, you can also use this stitch pattern from corner to corner.

The Yarn I Used for My Blanket
For my square crochet baby blanket, I used Sirdar – Country Classic Worsted in Golden which is a #4 Worsted yarn 50% Merino and 50% acrylic. Although the beautiful thing about this pattern, is that you can use any yarn weight you want, with a suitable crochet hook and just repeat the pattern to the size you want (just notice that the amount of yarn needed will be different than the pattern calls for).
To make your blanket bigger, just repeat rounds 9-14 as the pattern instructs to the size you want (smaller or bigger).
