Granny Squares FAQs

How Do You Make a Crochet Granny Square?

All granny squares are made starting from the middle out, you can either start with a magic ring or work into a loop made with a few chains slip stitched together to form a loop.

Then you start working the first round into that loop/ring and build your square round after round. Some squares are working the rounds while the right side is facing you, and some squares are suggesting to turn your work in each round.

While the classic granny square is worked with 3 double crochet clusters separated with 1 chain, you will find here so many unique variations for a granny square! For example, my Crossways Granny Square.

Is a Crochet Granny Square a Beginner Friendly Pattern?

It depends on the pattern itself. You can find a lot of beginner to easy skill level crochet granny square patterns, and as you can see from the patterns above, there are also quite a lot of intermediate patterns, with more complicated techniques.

But it’s always recommended to check the designer’s description of the pattern, some of these squares are much easier than they look!

What Kind of Yarn Should You Use for Granny Squares?

This depends on the type of project you want to make from those squares.
If you are going to make a blanket, then any type of soft cotton, acrylic or wool mix would be great.

But if you’re planning to make an item like coasters, trivets, a bag, or any kind of home decor or kitchen item then 100% cotton yarn is the most suitable for this kind of project, because it is easier to wash and safer when used as coasters or potholders.

How to Crochet a Granny Square Blanket?

First thing, choose the granny square (or squares) you want to use for your blanket.

You can choose one of the designs above, then make as many squares as needed to create a blanket in the size you want (maybe use different colors for each square).

Another fun option, is to mix and match different squares to create an eye catching blanket.
